Adventures along the Ancient Silk Road.
We visited an Evening Market in Hotan on our journey along the Ancient Silk road. Hotan is an Oasis town located on the Southern corridor of the ancient silk route. It lies in the Tarim basin just North of the Kunlun Mountains.
This place is a melting pot of cultures. Some of the early travellers have either set up base or have intermarried with the residents. Most of them do not have the “Chinese” facial features.
Naan and mutton are the staple foods of this region. One can find naan breads of different sizes and fillings here. Mutton kebabs, boiled mutton and mutton soups are usually the main course.
I have processed the pictures in “grunge” style to reflect how I felt when I was visiting this evening market in Hotan, Xinjiang. Photosafari will be organising a photosafari adventure tour to the Old Silk Road and the Rainbow Mountains from 18th to 28th Oct 2014.

This roasted lamb tasted real good. The owner offered us a piece each to try. We ended up buying from him.

Roasted chicken stall. Hotan is predominantly Muslims. Pork and non-halal food were not sold at this market.

Parents usually bring their babies to their stalls. These practice pre-dates the present practice of bring babies to offices.
