Scenes from the Vegetable Market on Dal Lake, Srinagar.

The early morning vegetable market on Dal Lake was an experience not to be missed. About 40 to 50 boats carrying vegetables, flowers, spices and saffron ply their trade there. This market catered to the local residents of the lake. However, lately, tourist began to visit this place. The market started at around 7am and it was over by 9am. It was a meeting place of sorts where the vendors and buyers would mingle and share the latest news and gossips. The locals used shallow paddle boats unlike the Shikaras used by the tourist. Motorised boats were banned to preserve the environment.
